RISE UP HAWAII
If you’ve been following our movement since our Haiti event, then you know our reputation of teaming up with various non-profits as a “support system” to help raise money for their cause. We’ve teamed up with the American Red Cross and earned $2,300 for Haiti relief, and we also earned $650 for The Hawaiian Humane Society for Animal Cruelty awareness. But this time around, Rise Up Hawaii will be breaking away from that original format. Since our two shows, we’ve been getting questions from people asking “Where does the money go?” and “How is it being used?” Honestly, we don’t really know where the money goes once it’s been donated….
OUR NEW DIRECTION
Therefore we’ll be taking a bold turn into a new direction. Instead of teaming up with another non profit, we at Rise Up will take the money to the cause. We would like to reach a level of transparency with our followers. We want to document and show you; the people where the money goes, how it’s being used and how much it’ll make an impact to our cause. So this Nov. 20th we will be holding a huge event, a benefit concert for Hawaii’s homeless at Fresh Cafe…every single dollar and penny we earn that night will go directly to a project we call “Project Care Package.
HAWAII’S HOMELESS
As we all know, Hawaii’s homeless problem has been increasing rapidly, mainly due to the rising house markets, job losses and the lack of low income housing. Because of the economy, many families who can’t afford food or housing are now housed under tarps at our beaches or on benches in our communities. Many are surviving off of humble donations by thoughtful passers, some are surviving off of the land, and some are barely holding on….
For the past few months, the Rise Up Hawaii crew has been conducting interviews with Hawaii’s Homeless in the beaches of Wai’anae and we’ve also been speaking with various community leaders and advocates. During these interviews, we were able to pass out surveys asking the homeless residents what they need the most. Many of them requested first aid kits, pillows and blankets, canned foods, propane tanks, and flash lights, etc.. Therefore with project “Care Package” we’ll be using all money earned during the night of our event to compile these bags, which will then be distributed to the families that desperately need it.
The situation that we’ve seen in the beaches of waianae is unexplainable, it’s something that needs to be seen, so in conjunction with our show, we’ll also be screening a film: The Blue Tarp City, Directed by Henry Mochida.
HCR114
Also, we’ll be having a special guest, Representative Tom Brower to talk about a special Bill that Rise Up Hawaii will be trying to pass into the legislature. To read more about this bill, copy and paste this link: http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2010/bills/HCR114_HD1_.pdf

We at Rise Up Hawaii do not have an answer to our homeless problem. Our main goal with this event is to spark a conversation and to provoke awareness within our communities and society. Hopefully with that, we’ll inspire people to Rise Up and take action.
We at Rise Up Hawaii also believe that the people as ONE, have the power to make a difference. More than politicians, more than religious leaders, and more than specialists…and that’s what we want to instill onto our followers, the sense that they can make a difference if we all came together. We are reaching out to everyone in the community, If you’d like to help out, get your school involved, your church, your family, everyone. The more people we can get to this event, the more we can make a big difference.
