Rise Up for Japan

For the folks that weren’t able to make it to our Rise Up for Japan show, here’s an awesome video taken by Jeremiah Tayao of Variant Films. (video below)

Overall the show was a great success. It was a smaller show with a rather more intimate setting than our previous shows, but with a great outcome. Big mahalo to Jack Salvatore Jackman of Nemesis Productions for helping us put together the show, all of the musicians that lent their talents that night, including I Digress, Ill Hill Society, After Ever After, Tyler Alai, Brittney Mendoza, the Night Marchers. And a special shout out to Greg Wings, Bev Ann and our very own Joel Gaspar for showcasing their artwork.

We raised about $150 in donations that night, all of which went straight to the American Red Cross to help in the relief efforts in Japan.

Why Water?

It’s hard not to think about water today. In the western world, we face growing concerns about our stewardship of the world’s most precious resource. There’s talk of shortages, evidence of reservoirs and aquifers drying up, and of course, plenty of people who simply don’t care.

But forget about us.

Most of us have never really been thirsty. We’ve never had to leave our houses and walk 5 miles to fetch water. We simply turn on the tap, and water comes out. Clean. Yet there are a billion people on the planet who don’t have clean water. It’s hard to imagine what a billion people looks like really, but one in eight might be easier. One in eight people in our world don’t have access to the most basic of human needs. Something we can’t imagine going 12 hours without.

Here, we’d like to introduce you to a few of those billion people. They are very real, and they need our help. They didn’t choose to be born into a village where the only source of water is a polluted swamp. And we didn’t choose to be born in a country where even the homeless have access to clean water and a toilet. We invite you to put yourself in their shoes. Follow them on their daily journey. Carry 80 pounds of water in yellow fuel cans. Dig with their children in sand for water. Line up at a well and wait 8 hours for a turn.

Now, make a decision to help. We’re not offering grand solutions and billion dollar schemes, but instead, simple things that work. Things like freshwater wells, rainwater catchments and sand filters. For about $20 a person, we know how to help millions.

Start by helping one.

(an excerpt from charitywater.org)

Most of us have never really been thirsty. We’ve never had to leave our houses and walk five miles to fetch water. We simply turn on the tap, and water comes out. Clean.
Yet almost one billion people on the planet don’t have clean water. Line up at a well and wait eight hours for a turn.

Now, make a decision to help. We’re not offering grand solutions and billion dollar schemes but instead, simple things that work. Things like freshwater wells, rainwater catchments and sand filters. For about $20 a person, we know how to help millions of people. Start by helping one.

RISE UP HAWAII

If you’ve been following our movement since our Haiti event, then you know our reputation of teaming up with various non-profits as a “support system” to help raise money for their cause. We’ve teamed up with the American Red Cross and earned $2,300 for Haiti relief, and we also earned $650 for The Hawaiian Humane Society for Animal Cruelty awareness. But this time around, Rise Up Hawaii will be breaking away from that original format. Since our two shows, we’ve been getting questions from people asking “Where does the money go?” and “How is it being used?” Honestly, we don’t really know where the money goes once it’s been donated….

OUR NEW DIRECTION

Therefore we’ll be taking a bold turn into a new direction. Instead of teaming up with another non profit, we at Rise Up will take the money to the cause. We would like to reach a level of transparency with our followers. We want to document and show you; the people where the money goes, how it’s being used and how much it’ll make an impact to our cause. So this Nov. 20th we will be holding a huge event, a benefit concert for Hawaii’s homeless at Fresh Cafe…every single dollar and penny we earn that night will go directly to a project we call “Project Care Package.

HAWAII’S HOMELESS

As we all know, Hawaii’s homeless problem has been increasing rapidly, mainly due to the rising house markets, job losses and the lack of low income housing. Because of the economy, many families who can’t afford food or housing are now housed under tarps at our beaches or on benches in our communities. Many are surviving off of humble donations by thoughtful passers, some are surviving off of the land, and some are barely holding on….

For the past few months, the Rise Up Hawaii crew has been conducting interviews with Hawaii’s Homeless in the beaches of Wai’anae and we’ve also been speaking with various community leaders and advocates. During these interviews, we were able to pass out surveys asking the homeless residents what they need the most. Many of them requested first aid kits, pillows and blankets, canned foods, propane tanks, and flash lights, etc.. Therefore with project “Care Package” we’ll be using all money earned during the night of our event to compile these bags, which will then be distributed to the families that desperately need it.

The situation that we’ve seen in the beaches of waianae is unexplainable, it’s something that needs to be seen, so in conjunction with our show, we’ll also be screening a film: The Blue Tarp City, Directed by Henry Mochida.

HCR114

Also, we’ll be having a special guest, Representative Tom Brower to talk about a special Bill that Rise Up Hawaii will be trying to pass into the legislature. To read more about this bill, copy and paste this link: http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2010/bills/HCR114_HD1_.pdf

We at Rise Up Hawaii do not have an answer to our homeless problem. Our main goal with this event is to spark a conversation and to provoke awareness within our communities and society. Hopefully with that, we’ll inspire people to Rise Up and take action.

We at Rise Up Hawaii also believe that the people as ONE, have the power to make a difference. More than politicians, more than religious leaders, and more than specialists…and that’s what we want to instill onto our followers, the sense that they can make a difference if we all came together. We are reaching out to everyone in the community, If you’d like to help out, get your school involved, your church, your family, everyone. The more people we can get to this event, the more we can make a big difference.

To find out how you can be involved, visit our website for more information: riseuphawaii.org or you can email us at “riseuphawaii@gmail.com”

BIG THANK YOU TO FRESH CAFE FOR THEIR SUPPORT

What is Youth Speaks Hawaii?

Youth Speaks Hawaii is a poetry community that exposes teens to Spoken Word Poetry. We are a collective of teen and adult poets actively performing, presenting and teaching poetry in classrooms and community centers across the state. Our homebase is at ARTS at Mark’s and we are supported by The Hawaii Arts Alliance. Every week YSH’i hosts a writing workshop on Wednesdays at 4:30p; free and open to all writing styles and abilities. We have students from charter, public, and private schools come in from all over the island to write and share together. It really is an amazingly supportive group of poets, both the peers and the mentors, focused on the development of others while paralleled with self improvement. No one is forced to share but the desire builds independently and eventually.

Also at Mark’s, every 2nd Saturday of the month, at 3pm, YSH’i puts on a free, teen-driven and hosted show that includes a teen Slam, teen host, teen feature poet, and an open mic (old people allowed, if there is time). This show has blown up in the last few months. It has been really impressive what has grown from the efforts of the youth, along with the guidance of Travis T, Program Director, and what has been done with the time slot.

YSH has a variety of outreach programs to reach the needs of the schools of Hawai’i. We have poets who establish Residencies and have a long term series with classes. We also have a program where poets visit schools as substitute teachers and facillitate workshops similar to the model we use at the after school workshop. We also perform in a variety of venues, for every thing from a humanitarian cause to a positive-message party, where ever there is a stage and/or a mic.

Once a year we have a Slam Finals and teens compete to make the Youth Speaks Hawaii travel squad; the top 6 poets are selected and they spend the summer writing and performing poetry in preperation for Brave New Voices, a national poetry competition that happens in July. YSH has advanced to semis every year since 2006 and in 2008 and 2009 YSH’i was the back to back champions. The team representing Hawai’i has a well-earned reputation for innovative team pieces and clever, honest, and relevant writing.

How and why is it important for people especially the youth to be more involved in activism?

We work with Students and teens, these voices and minds are growing and developing, preparing them for their futures. Activism is nessacary for voices silenced by those empowered by status quo. If people do not speak up then only one voice is heard. The youth need to believe that their voices matter, what we do is help the students express their ideas and opinions through writing them down and preparing them to share those ideas. Not only is it empowering, it is also educational. We create dialoges that would otherwise be stifled or silenced. these students learn quickly that poets are accountable for their words and they build a responsibility and purpose to speak up and about things that matter to them. We activly prepare students with valuble skills in reading, writing, and oral communication; building a generation that thinks and speaks for itself. We foster a sustainable group of free-thinkers, many of which become involved in causes and groups they find important.

But activism with youth can take many different forms. Anything that fosters positive growth and indivisuality is a form of activism.Audience members can be activist. A coach can be an activist, a preacher, a big brother; whoever has the ability to reach people can be an activist, and the effect you can have on people is amazing. You have the opportunity to help people see things from another angle, but you have the responsibility to let them see it for themselves, you can’t force your beliefs upon people, even if you feel they are right.

What are some problems or issues you feel that needs to be tackled more here in Hawaii or globally. And why?

Education- Education Issues are complicated and there are no easy answers. Teachers need support; there is no other job with this much training, this much presentation time, meeting time, planning time, paper work and evaluations where there is not secretarial aide for the position. Class sizes are getting larger, teachers are too over-worked with class time to allow for proper lesson planning time.

Accountability needs to be established but standardized tests do not measure the important things. Arts and Activities are cut from budgets, followed closely by sports and for many students the classes that made school enjoyable are now missing, and so are a lot of those would be students, to find art classes on concrete and sports in back alley brawls.

Those in charge of public education funds need to believe that their vested interest spans beyond if their kid goes to public school. A well educated public allows for more civic interaction, financial efficacy, and a sustainable skills structure and hiring pool to allow wealth and harmony to perpetuate in a more vast section of society.

Public Transit- we clog ourselves up on the road. I don’t know is a steel on steel plan is the right one. We seem to be looking at mainland solutions to island problems. We need to consider resources we have. If you want people to take public transit, it needs to be cheap and reasonable. Workers should get discounted rates around the times and routs to and from work, there needs to be all night service. We have tons of charter bus buisnesses, allow them to use the routs and stops during non-peak times- it may curb drinking and driving. Stagger school and state jobs to reduce traffic. Steel on Steel just seems a noisy, impracticle, expensive project when we should be looking at better using the infrastructure and layout that currently exists.

Local Trade- We have become so dependent on the mainland and others for goods and an economy. We build on beautiful lands to accomidate tourism at the cost of aesthetics. Small businesses slowly die out to chain stores and less and less money stays in local pockets. We need to encourage local agriculture and crafts. We have such fertile lands and access to clean energy, it is sad to see missed oppritunities while millions of dollars are being spent on GMO foods in a place that can grow virually anything. We don’t even grow enough to accommodate a great cultural shift in our consuming as of now, so change doesn’t have to be drastic, but when you can, support local and small businesses… that includes poetry and the arts.

Civil Unions- To me, equality is not up for debate or popular vote. Calvin Say and Linda Lingle were just plain wrong to hold up this bill natural process.

Let me plug my projects for a second. A reprinting of my original chatbook is coming soon, as well as the corresponding CD, TRUE Confessions of a Compulsive LIAR. My new chatbook, The Poet’s Hypocritic Oaf is finishing up nicely and the plans for a CD are in the works. I am gathering a jam band together for more poetry and music collaborations, I like to call it Poesic. Updates available at poorwettree.com.

What are your thoughts on the Rise Up Hawaii Movement?

I think RUHM has done beautiful things getting artists involved in causes and movements that are important to be expressed. People like to have a good time, and if the excuse to have a night filled with fun, expression, and friendship, why not also support causes and groups that need help? I think for the most part people are good and people want to help, the hard part is finding small ways for people to contribute to get a greater goal. these events do that, entertainers and the entertained come together in celebration, and what ever the hard times we face, we can’t forget to celebrate.

What are some of the upcoming events Youth Speaks Hawaii will participate in?

We always have one or two things in the works. This month Tui Scanlan, Faith Pascua, and myself visited the Big Island. We got to participate in Honoka’a's Peace Day Parade and activities, as well as visit classrooms and I even got to perform for BJ Penn’s youth students, trying to build bridges with other programs in the community. We are doing a Youth Empowerment Forum at the Convention Center by the time this prints. We are always active, but many of our jobs are for closed or registered events to ensure safe learning environments for poets expressing themselves, so if you want a workshop for your group, let us know. Our Wednesday Writing Workshops at ARTS at Mark’s Garage are open for all youths, and adults connected to education and poetry. The 2nd Saturday Slam is open to the public and you will see the youth poetry community in full force. There are always new faces being welcomed in and the regular poets showcase their favorite hits and new material. Most poetry events around town has some sort of Youth Speaks representation and are always looking for new places to perform. There is a new slam starting at Hawaii Theatre, known as Hawaii Theatre Slam, next show is November 5th during First Friday’s art walk, and that has a wonderful group of poets putting on a slam as a collective effort.

If there is ever an event that poetry seems suiting for, ask organizers to get ahold of Youth Speaks Hawai’i. There are many active members who are able to share the spirit of Youth Speaks Hawai’i. We survive by living on the breath from Word of Mouth, so if there is a school or group that seems interested in poetry shows, showcases, presenters, or educators, please let us know.

By Joel Gaspar

I first heard of Frank when he asked us if he could play for our benefit concert against animal cruelty back in May of 2010. Normally we didn’t have musicians that asked us if they could contribute, most of the time it was usually the other way around. After getting to know Frank a little bit more, I began to realize that he was no ordinary musician that sang of the usual heartbreak or how cool he/she was. The music and the message this man carried in his lyrics spoke of empowerment and change. And what was more intriguing was his views on world issues and the problems we have here in Hawaii. As a fresh face to the islands I was shocked at how much Frank knew about our issues here in Hawaii. What fascinated me more was his dedication to helping our homeless problem.

It was because of Frank that sparked an idea. An idea that we at Rise Up should recognize and showcase these type of musicians, that are more than just your typical. We want to feature artists of change, with messages of hope, empowerment and with music that can ignite a movement.

Therefore we at Rise Up Hawaii would like to feature Frank Bressi as our very first, Artist of the Month! With this article we hope this would empower more musicians out there to be more involved in our community and to take part in a positive change for our society.

Who is Frank Bressi?

I’m a songwriter, musician and performer originally from the Jersey Shore. I grew up in Long Branch, New Jersey born to a Merchant Marine father and a mother who was an elementary school teacher. Both my mom and dad are of Southern Italian decent and since my dad came from Italy it makes me second generation. Spending time with the whole family around a big table over a meal was a cultural staple growing up and it gave me an extended sense of self and social responsibility that I carry with me today. To me we’re all family.

I have always liked reading just about anything. I like physics, movies, the outdoors and Jeet Kune Do. I’ve been making music since I was 4 or 5 after finding an old Elvis album in a stack of records in my parents’ den. The first song I ever bought was “Instant Karma!” by John Lennon and my first CD was The Stone Roses. These days I listen to artists like Radiohead, Bjork, The New Pornographers and Trans Am. In addition to making music I have recently begun creating television and film ideas, many of which have social/environmental themes. One of my ideas addresses the homeless problem in Hawai’i. I had to shelf it briefly when I first moved here due to other obligations but since I’ve been living here I feel like I have accumulated enough street level knowledge to get back to work on it. Honolulu is home to some incredibly talented and compassionate people, many of which are committed to positive social change through activism. I consider myself very fortunate to be living here. Since I’ve been living on the island I’ve been lucky enough to volunteer with CMA and Rise Up Hawai’i.

How and why is it important for people especially the youth to be more involved in activism?

Activism is a broad term. It suggests organization, promotion, donations and sometimes controversy. Let’s start by simplifying it down to “taking action in a positive direction”. It is incredibly important for the youth to take action in a positive direction! I think oftentimes people are convinced that they can’t make a difference or that their voice alone won’t be heard but nothing could be farther from the truth. If a young person can find the courage to speak out in a positive, intelligent way, they can be a powerful force of change in the world. But again let’s simplify further…I think the grand scale of problems we face today, both in Hawai’i and elsewhere in the world can have a paralyzing effect on someone who might really want to take action but they’re stuck thinking, “Where do I begin?”.

I suggest starting small. Examine your own life. Don’t get overwhelmed by all the trouble in the world or the question of which “cause” to support at first. Start with yourself and start today. If you see an older person struggling to open a heavy door, help them. If you see a young mother struggling with too many bags, offer to carry some of them. These positive actions only take a minute and need no cash flow to make them work. They don’t need to be advertised or promoted. In fact, no one ever needs to know they happened at all. Slow down your mind, shut off your machines and listen. You will know what to do when the time comes.

If you feel comfortable being socially active on a larger scale you need to educate yourself! I can’t stress this enough. Find a “cause” or problem that means something to you and learn all you can about it because without a firm grasp on the issue you’ll never be able to create the momentum needed for change. Speak intelligently and with compassion and people will listen. They may not agree but they will respect your position if it comes from a place of strength. The same goes for choosing an organization. Education is the key. Investigate the policies and practices of the group. Investigate their positions on issues other than the one you’re interested in supporting. Make sure they’re the kind of organization you can put your heart into and your energy behind.

If you can’t find an existing organization that really speaks for you then create your own! Young people today have resources, energy and passion but many lack direction. They are tricked into apathy by the ruling class because the ruling class rules by fear and persuasion. Activism can be that liberating path of positive direction for many of the young people out there today. We are living in very polarizing times. We are on the brink of a great cultural revolution. Taking positive action now, speaking out for social justice and peace, speaking out for ethical agricultural practices and environmental safety or whatever it is that affects you is the only way to ensure that the world we grow older in and the world your kids grow up in is better than the one we’re in now. What could be more important than that? There are some amazing organizations based right here on Oah’u! Young people interested in getting active can come out and support shows put on by Flux Magazine, CMA and Rise Up Hawai’i. They can get a feel for what issues might be of interest to them and have a great time doing it!

What are some problems or issues you feel that needs to tackled more here in Hawaii or globally. And why?

The first and most visible to me is “Homelessness”. Over the past several months I’ve heard a number of inspired solutions to the homeless issue such as the “River Street Residence” which unfortunately was bogged down in red tape and community opposition until the funding window closed. It’s too bad because that one project alone could have given a fresh start to so many people. Of course, it’s a complex issue that may never be totally “solved” as there are some homeless who refuse to leave the streets but for those that do wish to rejoin society Hawai’i needs to have something in place to provide a sustainable plan of action for them involving community outreach, counseling, transitional housing, education and job placement.

Another issue is “Human Trafficking”. Many people associate that term only with the sex trade however as recent news has reminded us there are countless men and woman lured here to Hawai’i to work on farms. They mortgage their properties, sell off belongings, leave their homes and families and pay huge fees to “Employment Agents” only to be enslaved on plantations living in cramped, unsanitary conditions keeping silent out of fear for their lives and the prospect of never seeing their families again. This is recent news, as in 2010.

The irony? In one problem we have a surplus of people looking for work and in the other we have a surplus of people being shipped in illegally to do just that…

Honolulu growing as a 21st Century city is another issue that I think about often:
To “Rail” or not to “Rail”, rampant construction, abuse of eminent domain, updating the infrastructure. Modernizing the city without sacrificing the Aloha. Sustainable employment vs contract jobs that run out once the construction is completed. Creating a strong public education system that will turn out intelligent, informed and healthy Hawai’ian graduates and competitive employment to keep the best and brightest from leaving for the mainland. Overall, lessening Hawai’ian dependence on the mainland. I’m interested in learning more about the proposed “Windmill” project on Moloka’I which on the surface sounds like a good “Green” idea until you talk it out with some Moloka’I residents as I have. So like I said, it’s an issue I’d like to look more deeply into. This is a crucial time for Hawai’i. We have a unique opportunity here and now to learn from the mainland’s mistakes so we don’t repeat them.

What are your thoughts on the Rise Up Hawaii Movement?

I love Rise Up Hawai’i. Even when you focus on issues or causes outside of Hawai’i the underlying message is that Hawai’I can reach out to the rest of the world and has more to offer than just Waikiki and tourism.

I love how “Rise Up” combines quality local art and bands with a socially significant issue. People who come out to support the events come out for a good cause but also for a good time! It’s a really well run organization. There always seems to be so much thought and planning behind the scenes to ensure the result isn’t just another show but an event that people will remember attending. The trick is to combine a carefree party atmosphere with an intense feeling of doing something good and making a difference and every “Rise Up” event I’ve attended has done just that. I’ve found “Rise Up Hawai’i promotes a very inclusive model as well. You aren’t afraid to work in cooperation with other local organizations to achieve your goals. I have a great respect for groups that work for positive change and get results that inspire people to get involved, become more aware of the world around them and take action! Thanks very much for everything you’ve done so far and all the best for the events you’ve yet to promote. Rock on!
